Cosmopolitan cuisine with a heavy Austrian accent in the heart of downtown Palm Springs.. A modern and minimal palette of cantaloupe- and periwinkle-colored walls, industrial track lighting, white linen tablecloths and eggshell-hued leather chairs sets the tone for this haute foodie favorite from Austrian-born chef/owner Johannes Bacher. The black-clad waitstaff present eclectic meat and seafood dishes artfully arranged by Chef Bacher, who works in the long open kitchen located at the entrance's main bar. The sophisticated mix of straight couples and gay crowds usually can't resist starting with the playfully named menage a trois, a robust mixture of lobster, shrimp and scallops dressed in a licoricey, spicy-sweet cream sauce. The lightly breaded wiener schnitzel, set alongside roasted fingerling potatoes and cranberry jelly, is a signature dish, but the daily specials--such as halibut mounted atop a thick swirl of pineapple sauerkraut and smoke-roasted bratwurst halves--are distinct pleasers not likely to be found anywhere else on this desert strip of restaurants.
nice alternative to another steak house. My wife and the couple we were traveling with wanted to find something other than another steak house and we did! We all thoroughly enjoyed the food, wine and service. The restaurant itself was small and a little cool but didn't hinder our enjoyment of it. Dress warm and enjoy.
For Pete's Sake, I would like some service!. My husband and I took my parents to Johannes over the holidays after hearing wonderful reviews. The service ruined not only the meal, but the entire evening. Our waiter acted like he had a huge chip on his shoulder for having to work. He would not describe the menu, he was huffy when we asked him for water, he neglected putting our orders in on a timely basis-- everyone got their food at a different time, most of which had to be sent back for over-cooking or under-cooking. He was downright mean. Angry. The food was forgettable, at best. There was no manager on duty to speak with, even though we were clearly frusterated-- as were many other tables.
Well worth the visit!. Upon several recommendations we chose to spend our highly valued "date night" at Johannes. We were not disappointed! The food was fabulous and highly inventive. My husband ordered two appetizers in addition to his entree, and because they were so wonderful, he savored every drop! The dessert was among the best I've had anywhere. The staff was attentive and sensitive, keeping plates cleared and glasses filled. It was expensive, but worth every cent.
Good but not cheap. Our group of six enjoyed a good meal and an excellent cocktail and wine selection. It was a little pricey but probably on par for Palm Springs.
wow.
what an incredible chef Johannes is. This is one of my fave restaurants ever. His menu is well thought out and has something for every taste. The freshest ingredients. I was here in '03 and remember what I had to eat a year later. Excellent wine selection.
Grilled octopus. Seared ahi tuna with sesame with apricot and one other sauce over brocolinni. Japanese sea scallops seared over spinach. Pork tenderloin.
Creme brulee. Molten chocolate cake. Apple strudel w/vanilla sauce.
Unique & Excellent Cuisine. The hostess was out again, Johannes was playing host again, and told us the hostess won't be back... More importantly, the food was indeed excellent, a creative and unique combination of European and Pacific Rim flavors. The ambience is "modern", service is excellent, and the restaurant is a very welcome alternative to the "Tourist Mile" on Palm Canyon Drive just a block away. The only improvement would be more choice for vegetarians.
Great, GREAT FOOD!. Dined here at the recommendation of some friends and found it to be the best food in Palm Springs! And the night we went 2/15/03, the owner was playing host because his hostess was out sick, and he was WONDERFUL! We made reservations and there was a bit of a wait because they were behind, but he was so accomodating. The drinks are fun and TASTY, try the Tangerine Martini, YUM! The food....TO DIE FOR! Really good - nuff said!
Culinary Elevation Internacional. A mindblowing dining experience! As a saavy diner, I have been around the world in search of culinarary stimulation. Little did I know that I would find "culinary elevation" right here in the heart of Palm Springs. The owner and chef, "Johannes" is an extremely talented Austrian-born creator of "World Fusion" cuisine. He takes the finest ingredients from all over the world and combines them in scintilating ways that few others have ever dreamed of. The result: Let's just say that when you taste this food, you toes will curl up automatically.
