It all started one day in 1996, when the Wilson family acquired a 20-acre winery. Their plan was simple: run a fun, family business producing great wines from the perfect climate and soil of the Temecula Valley. Since then, they have expanded operations to cover the range of wines from sparkling to whites to reds to dessert wines and the vineyard now covers over 70 acres. The task of finding out what your favorite wine is may be overwhelming, but Wilson Creek Winery wants you to have fun and be at home with them. The employees here are so nice and just love what they do here. You can see they have great pride in Wilson Creek Winery and the wines it produces. A great way to start your winery adventure is in the Tasting Room. This is the largest tasting room I have ever seen, more like a tasting warehouse. There is one bar in the Gift Shop but if you venture in further there are 5 more bars inside. There's plenty of room so don't be shy. Once you settle on a spot, a friendly employee will start asking you questions about what kinds of wines you like and help you through your adventure.
2011 Golden Jubilee is my favorite in their white wine category. It has balanced aromas of honeysuckle, jasmine, and vanilla with flavors of pear, honeydew melon and a hint of grapefruit. I can see this paired with a market salad with farm fresh berries (strawberries, raspberries, and/or blackberries) topped with some crumbled maytag bleu cheese and slivered almonds.
2009 Family Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is my favorite pick for their red wine category. Wilson Creek Winery describes it as "Royalty in a Bottle" and it definitely lives up to their description. It's rich and strong yet has a lot of different tones for a well-balanced wine with a smooth, clean finish. This would pair well with a bone-in ribeye with a light salt and pepper crust and char marks from the mesquite grill.
There is more beyond the visitor center, tasting room, and gift shop. There is a restaurant, Creekside Grille, an event center for weddings and private parties, beautiful courtyard with fantastic landscaping, and, of course, the vineyard as far as the eye can see. You can walk through the first couple of rows of the vineyard and see how this amazing plant grows. You can also take a guided tour which includes a stop in the tank room where the grapes begin their journey as a delectable wine. Our guide, Greg, who also is an apprentice under winemaker Etienne Cowper, has learned everything on the property from pruning, cultivating, planting, harvesting, and nurturing the vineyard to produce the perfect bottle of wine. Again, just another person working at Wilson Creek Winery who takes pride in the wine they produce and seeing that the wine is part of him. He loves his job and loves to educate people on all aspects of wine by showing them what they do. In turn, you can taste this commitment and pride in the wine. We also met Gerry and Rosie Wilson running their daily errands around the winery in their golf cart. They are so down-to-earth and make you feel like part of the family.
Almond Champagne is my favorite in the sparkling wine category. This will definitely give you an OMG moment or two. If fact, it's also nicknamed the "Oh My Gosh" Champagne so no wonder! It's sweet with a wonderful almond flavor that is just so different, like a celebration in a glass. Watch out Asti Spumante, there's a new sweet, sparkling wine taking over. At my next celebration, this is the sparkling wine I want to pour!
2009 Reserve Late Harvest Zinfandel Port is my favorite in the dessert wine category. This tastes like a dessert in a glass! It has the aromas of dried fruit, cherry, blackberry jam and toasted walnuts with a sweet finish. It tastes like a condensed sweet wine, almost like syrup but more viscous. I just can't believe how good it is.
Love this winery! – Love the tasting room, and the Creekside Grille restaurant that just opened! Great ambiance, vineyard views and the people that work that there are so nice! Give it try.
